Why was Meriwether Lewis on the Natchez Trace? In September 1809, Meriwether Lewis was living in St. Louis as the appointed Governor of the Upper Louisiana Territory. He left St. Louis for Washington, DC, on September 4, 1809, to protest the War Department’s denial of payment vouchers that he had submitted for reimbursement. Lewis traveled with his personal servant, a free African American man named John Pernia (sometimes also spelled Pernier.)
Bicycling on the Trace is a favorite pastime around here. Easy on and easy off the Natchez Trace Parkway is at the Meriwether Lewis Park, which commemorates the death of one of the great explorers of America.

While everyone has been hunkered down due to COVID-19 restrictions, it is best to call ahead to make sure your favorite winery is open to the public. Meriwether Lewis Campground Milepost 385.9 Natchez Trace Parkway. 800-305-7417. Includes a 32-site campground. Campground sites are on a first come first served basis, no reservations, no hook-ups, dump stations and showers. Pull-through and back-in sites are available. Campgrounds are typically busiest during the spring and fall, especially during holiday weekends. The rest of the Meriwether Lewis site includes hiking trails, a section of Old Trace, exhibits and picnic areas. MEMBER?

Have you ever stroked a polo bear? Well you can, at the Lewis County Museum of Natural History. Did you know Meriwether Lewis was murdered here? There is a great place to discover more about this great mystery. The Lewis County Museum of Natural History and Discovery Center is a great place to visit.
Built In 1896 along the North Carolina and St. Louis Railway Line, the Hohenwald Depot was the point of entry for newcomers to our area. The railroad brought immigrants from all over the world, including Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, to help establish the Hohenwald we know today. The names of employees from when it was a functioning train depot are still etched into the side of the walls in the freight room!

The Historic District is located in the original 1895 New Switzerland Township. The Swiss Pioneer Union of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with help and encouragement from the NC & St.L. Railroad and developer J.G. Propst, purchased the land from Eliza Smith and divided the land into lots. Streets were laid out at 90 degree angles.
Memorial Park is a 20.2 acre park located within the city of Hohenwald. Recreational facilities include four baseball and softball fields, which are utilized by the local Dixie Youth organizations, and two tennis courts, two basketball courts, gym, public swimming pool, playground and a walking track.
The 920-acre Devil's Backbone State Natural Area offers a visitor the opportunity for a quiet hike in a natural environment which has had little affected by modern human activity. The trail takes the hiker from the pavement of the Natchez Trace Parkway (located at milemarker 394 in Lewis County) out along the ridges of Tennessee's Highland Rim, down along a creek, and back again.
